It seemed Seattle wouldn’t get its traditional Independence Day fireworks show – until now.

The Seattle Mayor’s office plans to launch an effort to save the annual 4th of July fireworks show.

“A fireworks show on the Fourth of July is a civic tradition,” Mayor Mike McGinn said in a news release. “I, like many Seattle residents, was disappointed to learn last week that there would not be fireworks this year at Gas Works Park.”

“I’m optimistic at the moment,” McGinn told KIRO Radio’s Ross & Burbank.

The mayor is working with Seafair and the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce to put a plan together for a sustainable fireworks show in Seattle.

“Seafair is stepping up to become the sponsor of the event and make this a ‘Seafair Signature Event,'” said McGinn.

According to McGinn, they believe they can put on the show for a little less money than One Reel’s fireworks show, which came with a $500,000 price tag.

With many financial commitments already made to the new fireworks show, McGinn said they are well on their way to paying for the event. But he said they will need to do some fundraising.

One Reel, which has handled The Family 4th at Lake Union in the past, is not involved in the plan for the new fireworks event.

It is unclear if the location of the show will remain at Lake Union, and additional fundraising details are not currently available.

I don’t think the question is whether we're going to "kill" our car culture. The real question is can we stop our car culture from killing the U.S.?
