The first clip from the highly-anticipated Jimi Hendrix biopic has just been released, days before it premiers at the South By Southwest festival in Austin, TX.
“All Is By My Side” is written and directed by John Ridley, the Academy Award-winning writer of “12 Years a Slave,” and stars rapper Andre 3000 of Outkast fame.
Some controversy surrounded the film because Hendrix’ family, which controls his music, refused to license any of his songs for the film.
The clip shows Hendrix (Andre 3000) trying to convince his friend Linda Keith (Imogen Poots), to run away with him to the Monterey Pop Festival behind his girlfriend’s back.
The film might not have Hendrix’ music, but Andre 3000 looks pretty convincing as Jimi in the clip. The rapper has said in interviews he listened to hours of Hendrix interviews and watched films to get his speech and mannerisms down.
Along with the premier of the film, Hendrix will also be honored next week in Austin with the unveiling of a Jimi Hendrix Forever stamp by the U.S. Postal Service.
The stamp will be revealed at a free outdoor concert at SXSW with performances by such noted guitarists as Slash of Guns N’ Roses fame, the MC5’s Wayne Kramer, Dave and Phil Alvin of the Blasters, Rusty Anderson of Paul McCartney’s touring band and others.
