When it comes to Congressional gender diversity, we have a long way to go according to Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) in an interview with KING 5 piece over the weekend.

“I, many times, would have people who it didn’t even enter their consciousness that a woman could be a U.S. senator,” Murray said.

She argues that while there’s been progress to elect more females to Congress, “We still have to increase the numbers and reflect what our country looks like.”

The first question that comes to mind is why do we need to do that exactly? Why is it important? It’s true we have more females than males in this country, but why should the Congress reflect that superficial characteristic?

Isn’t it more important to elect people who actually represent our viewpoints? For example, let’s say you’re pro-choice. Does it matter if you elect a woman to office if she’s pro-life? Would you say “Well, it’s all good — she’s a reflection of the gender majority in this country.” Probably not. If you’re pro gun, would you care if the Congress person is a male or a female or if they’ll vote to preserve the Second Amendment?

The country is predominantly white, yet we hear so often we need to elect more black and Latino leaders to office. Well, should we elect less because we need to keep them from representing more of a percentage in Congress than they do the population? Of course not.

This is just a phony issue. What activists and Senator Murray really mean when they say elect more women, is they want you to elect more women who identify as Democrats. The activists and Murray don’t really care if the person is a man or a woman, they just want a Democrat.

For example, the National Organization for Women has the opportunity to endorse Congresswoman Renee Ellmers for re-election in North Carolina. They didn’t because she’s a Republican and doesn’t think like them. NOW endorsed Clay Akin!

They’re the National Organization for Women and they passed on Congresswoman Ellmers for Clay Aiken – not even an American Idol winner. He lost.

When Mia Love became the first black Republican woman elected to Congress, NOW didn’t put out a press release. When Joni Ernst became the first female elected to Senate from IA, I didn’t see a press release from Senator Murray’s office praising the election of another female politician. They only celebrate when their side wins – and their side isn’t female. It’s Democrat.

Are they wrong to think the Congress should represent their ideals and not necessarily the gender demographic? No. They’re right. If you believe your principles and values, whether liberal, conservative, or socialist, are best for this country, you should rally behind the candidates to help realize your vision. You shouldn’t blindly rally behind a gender. Murray doesn’t even truly want that anyway, so stop hiding behind “gender equality” to push what you really want, which is like-minded people in office. You think Murray and progressive activists would cheer if the Senate was composed of 100 female Republicans? Of course not. Just be honest.
